The Orchestra Pit
Scaledown #130
(Friday 30th June 2017)

June sees in the 130th scaledown and, therefore, marks our 13th birthday; on a friday! Under a ladder! With a black cat crossing our path! Lucky artists, though, are in no particular order:

ALEX MONK - Drawing on influences from the 60s and 70s acid folk movement combined with a curiosity to experiment with ambient music, found sound, drone and electronics, Alex has been a regular Scaledown fixture over the years. Monk’s work has been compared to everything from Brian Eno and John Balance to Robert Wyatt and Islaja, and for this show, he will be playing new material from his upcoming album 'Come to your senses old devil'.

FRAN ISHERWOOD - Poems take you on a wry, awry, word-playful gallop through the vagaries of life encountering mail stealing snails, lollipop ladies, Glam Rock, insomnia and macabre part time jobs. Splendid stuff for Scaledown! Can't believe she hasn't been here before.

HELENMcCOOKERYBOOK - Starting as bass player/singer with The Chefs and guitarist/singer with Helen and the Horns in the 1980s (John Peel favourites both), after a 20 year break to raise a family, she returned to the stage as a solo artist 10 years ago, touring the UK regularly, releasing 3 solo albums + 2 with Martin Stephenson; she has just completed a new solo album ‘The Sea’, receiving airplay from BBC6’s Gideon Coe + an upcoming remix from Young Marble Giants founder Stuart Moxham, and this show forms part of a tour that includes shared bills with Vic Godard and The Bitter Springs.

GRAN-PAW FRANKEE AND THE SON OF A GUN -Frank E. (from the occult psychocountry band Lonesome Cowboys from Hell) appears with his ancient granpappy, Gran-paw Frankee – a singing, cussin’, unstable outlaw who takes the form of a large marionette (though "he ain’t no puppet!"). He is accompanied on honky-tonk keyboard by his sidekick, the Son-of-a-Gun

LEONHEART -Leonheart has kept diverse company with collaborators from Jazz, soul, metal and electro. Her latest collaboration is with producer Felix McIntosh from Tigersonic studios and last year they released Smash Up The Clocks, an art & music project based around time. Tonight she shows us what she can do with 15 minutes.

MATT BATTLE - "Lo-Fi aesthetic with punk pop sensibilities combined with a fantastical folky twist". That's the music of Mr Battle, that is....

CAT ROGERS - Songs of science, scientists and more things we don't understand - yet.

As ever, it is FREE! Come and hear/see the scaled down performances. DOORS OPEN AT 7.30 PM of the clock for an 8pm start. FIFTEEN MINUTES PER ACT! Come along to:
